October 2000 U .S. Soy closes deal with tofu maker A Mattoon soybean distributor has closed a deal to sell at least 200 metric tons of food grade Illinois soybeans to a Belgian tofu manufacturer. U.S. Soy will send the first shipment to the company's production facility near Antwerp for testing. If they meet the quality standards, a second larger order will follow for up to 900 or 960 metric tons. The deal was reached after a meeting between the companies arranged by the Illinois Department of Agriculture's European foreign trade office in Brussels, Belgium.
"The European Union is an extremely difficult group to deal with,"
said James Skiff,
U.S. Soy president. " "The trade office has been very good at finding
customers, setting up appointments and identifying where we ought to focus our
attention, which is difficult for a small company like ours." Used with permission from Mid-Illinois
