April 17, 2000 Madigan Receives Woman of Achievement Award Joyce Madigan of Charleston has been awarded the Illinois Woman of Achievement award for dedicating her time and talent to the betterment of her community. Lt. Gov. Wood, Mayor Dan Cougill and Mayor Pro-Tem Marge Knoop presented Madigan with the award at a ceremony and reception March 7 in the rotunda of the Capitol in Springfield. The League of Women Voters of Illinois and the Illinois Municipal League joined the Lieutenant Governor's Office in the sponsoring the Illinois Woman of Achievement award to help celebrate Women's History Month. "Women's History Month is not just about honoring the great women who came before us, but is a time to recognize the women of today who are making history in their own right," Lt. Gov. Wood said. "The recipients of this award have committed themselves to improving our schools, hospitals and families, and I congratulate them on their achievements." Lt. Gov. Wood invited all Illinois mayors to select one woman from their community to receive the award. The more than 150 recipients of the Illinois Woman of Achievement award were honored for demonstrating excellence in their professional and volunteer work and committing themselves to enhancing their communities. Madigan was recognized for serving as chairwoman of Coles Together, an economic development agency for Coles County. She also is treasurer of the Sunrise Rotary Club and a charter member of Eastern Illinois University's accountancy advisory board. Used with permission from Mid-Illinois
