EIU RANKED THIRD LOWEST IN ILLINOIS CRIME REPORT

   CHARLESTON
- Eastern Illinois University had the third-lowest number of crime reports out of all 12public universities in Illinois in 1999.
   Only seven criminal offenses were reported to Eastern Illinois University campus security authorities or local police agencies in 1999, according to the Office of Post-Secondary Education's Web site. The reports included four robberies and three aggravated assaults.

   Only two public universities in Illinois had fewer reported crimes than EIU in 1999. Governor's State University in University Park had no reports in1999 while University of  Illinois in Springfield had four reports of criminal offenses in 1999. Both are commuter
schools and do not offer programs for freshmen and sophomores.
   The highest number of reports in 1999 from public, four-year universities in Illinois came from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, according to the OPE. There were 106 reports of criminal offenses on the Carbondale campus in 1999. These reports included 48 for motor vehic1e theft, 28 for aggravated assault and 12 for forcible sex offenses.

   There were no reports of murder or manslaughter at any public university in Illinois in 1999, according to the Web site. EIU also had no reports of forcible or non-forcible sex offenses, robbery, 'motor vehicle theft or arson on campus in 1999.  

   SIU-Carbondale had the most reports of alleged forcible and alleged non-forcible sex offenses, 12 and 9 respectively, on its campus in 1999.

Four public universities in Illinois each reported four robberies, the highest in this category in 1999. There were seven reports of motor vehicle theft at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1999, and six reports of arson at Illinois State University in  Norma in 1999. These were both the highest number of reports in those categories.

EIU had four reports of aggravated assault In 1999. That places EIU sixth out of the 12 public universities in Illinois.

There were 30 reports of liquor-law violations at EIU in 1999. EIU was ranked sixth of 12 in this category also.

There were 33 reports of drug violations on EIU's campus in 1999, which places the university fourth-highest in this Category. Illinois State University collected 89 reports of drug violations in 1999, the most in this category.

The 1999 statistics are the most recent available on the OPE Web site. The Site states some statistics are provided by non-police authorities.
